The Beggars captivate audience

MORE than 160 music lovers packed into the Innisfail Shire Hall on 14 April, swept up in a nostalgic celebration of The Seekers, as The Beggars delivered a captivating performance for the second instalment of the Morning Melodies concert series.

The show, ‘The Beggars Sing the Seekers’, traced the remarkable rise of the iconic Australian foursome, Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley, Keith Potger and Judith Durham from their early days in Melbourne’s 1962 café scene to their meteoric success in London and their 1968 BBC farewell television special watched by seven million viewers.

Audiences were treated to beloved classics including ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’, ‘The Carnival Is Over’, ‘Morningtown Ride’, ‘Island of Dreams’, ‘Red Rubber Ball’, the Oscar- winning song, ‘A World of Our Own’, ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Georgie Girl’. The trio also showcased their own originals such as ‘Open Up Them Pearly Gates’ and ‘Sinner Man’.

The Beggars made up of Renee Donaghey (vocals, guitar), Quinton Dunne (vocals, double bass) and Stuart Day (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica brought warmth, humour and musicianship to the stage

The next performance of the Morning Melodies series is on 4 August with Greg Andrew’s acclaimed Elton John tribute show Rocketman Flying Solo, starting at 10.30am. Tickets are $15 via Eventbrite or at the door (no cash).
