Three-win tie in golf classis

A THRILLING three-way playoff in the Mark Walker Junior Classic set the tone for a memorable King’s Birthday long weekend at Innisfail Golf Club, as players young and old came together to honour the legacy of Mark Walker, a loyal member for 30 years and a driving force behind junior golf in the region.

The junior classic on 2 October delivered standout performances, with Archie Walker, Zenon Wilesmith and local junior Keean Greven finishing tied in the 18-hole gross division.

The play-off was tight and tense, with Walker holding his nerve to secure victory on the second playoff hole.

Phoebe Moffat claimed the girls’ 18 hole gross title, rounding out a strong showing from the club’s juniors.

The weekend now in its eighth year continued with a fantastic turnout for the 4BBB competition on 3 October, played in mixed weather but full of good golf and plenty of laughs in memory of Mark. A colourful three ball Ambrose social day on 4 October capped off the weekend.

Innisfail also made a strong start in the first round of pennants, with A, B and C grade all securing wins against Mareeba at Atherton.

Highlights included wins by Ian Street (5/4), John Casale (1 up), Luke Peters (19th), Bryce Hoad (4/2) and Gary Breitkreutz, who celebrated his first pennant victory. The most dramatic finish came from Norm Stewart, who clinched the clean sweep with a clutch five-footer on the 21st tee.
