Tigers in ruthless 50-6 win over Sharks
TULLY’S A-grade Tigers delivered their most emphatic statement of the season on 18 July, unleashing a ruthless 50-6 demolition of Mossman Port Douglas in a round eight catch up clash that showed the competition they are far from finished.
Carrying heavy hearts and playing with their brother’s name on their jerseys, the Tigers produced a performance fuelled by emotion, unity and sheer determination.
Willie Tusa led the charge with a double, while Jaiden Mothe, Osbourne Ingui, Tama Wilson, Jamie Muriata, Cohen Emmi and Diega Teaukura all crossed the line in the nine try blitz.
The win was a powerful reminder of the team’s resilience during what has been one of the toughest months in the club’s history.
Darian Burton who backed up from reserve grade was immense in the middle, bending the defensive line with every carry.
Try scoring machine Jamie Muriata was again at his best, defusing danger at the back and finishing a slick backline movement for a well earned four pointer.
His older brother Nathan, called in late, delivered a reliable and composed performance, especially when the Sharks mounted a brief stand late in the game.
Schoolboy sensation Tama Wilson showed maturity beyond his years, refusing to be rattled despite repeated late hits from the opposition.
His strong showing added another layer to Tully’s dominant night.
Long time supporter and rugby league tragic Shane Muriata praised the team’s courage and unity.
“I was truly impressed with fullback Jaiden Mothe, who was all class and made a strong case for the number one jersey,” he said.
“I felt a real sense of pride watching these young men. Our brother Jwane will be sorely missed, but his memory will never fade. Every time we wear the Tully Tigers jersey, his name will be near our heart, where it belongs.”
The winning momentum continued in reserve grade, with Tully powering to a commanding 56-14 victory over Mossman Port Douglas.
Centre Victor Mau bagged a hat trick, while lock Darian Burton added a double in a dominant team display.
Other try scorers included Sam Tschui, Lester Mam, Nicholas Muriata, Luke Nocon, Xzavier Carlaw and Cooper McAllister. Cameron Ward (3), Jack Quirk (2) and Lester Mam added the extras.
Round 17 promises a blockbuster weekend of local rugby league, with Tully’s three senior men’s teams hosting reigning premiers Cairns Brothers on 1 August. Innisfail face a tough road trip to the Tablelands to take on Atherton across all grades.
