Too unsafe to open toilets
WORK to stabilise the embankment behind the public amenities block at South Mission Beach boat ramp and car park remains a fair way off completion, after delays caused by wet season rain.

The small but regularly used toilet block, which also normally caters for walkers of the nearby Kennedy trail and other visitors, was shut after a deluge brought by Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 caused a landslip and rockfall on the slope behind the building.
The block itself was not significantly damaged by the landslip, but Cassowary Coast Council decided to close it due to safety risks associated with the unstabilised slope.
Council originally hoped the work would be done and the amenities block re-opened by December.
“Works include cleaning up debris, removing loose rock and installing rock bolts and slope-mesh to reduce the risk of ongoing rockfall,” a council spokeswoman said at the time.
“After construction, council will move to reopen the toilet block. In the meantime, another toilet block is available 1.5km north, near the boat club at South Mission Beach.
“Council understands the inconvenience of closing the toilet block and we thank the community for their patience while we work to stabilise the slope and ensure the safety of community members and visitors.”
But tidal surges and heavy downpours brought by a tropical low weather systems in December and February are likely to have significantly affected the work because council had other priorities, including a large landslip at Alexander Drive, Bingil Bay.
Recent pictures taken at the site showed stabilisation work still underway, but there is no estimated date available of when the work might be completed.
At time of publication, council had yet to respond to The Observer’s request for an update.
