CAIRNS Surf Life Saving Club has won during tough conditions at the Surf Life Saving North Queensland Branch Surf Sports Carnival at Etty Bay.
Surf Life Saving North Queensland branch president and carnival referee Fiona Grant said while the picturesque setting provided a stunning backdrop, the conditions were anything but easy, with cool temperatures and strong winds creating challenging conditions in the water and on the sand on 28 and 29 August.
“An absolute standout was the resilience of even our youngest competitors, who battled it out in the cool and windy conditions across the board and surf swimming events,” she said.
“It was great to be able to test our skills in varying conditions and see our athletes adapt, persevere and give their best throughout the weekend.”
From beach flags through to the wade relays, the host club took on the visiting challengers and demonstrated impressive depth across the beach events, adding plenty of excitement to the competition.
Cairns Surf Life Saving Club emerged as the overall carnival winners, ahead of the competition moving to stunning Palm Cove on 12 and 13 September, where Cairns SLSC will have the home beach advantage.
Ms Grant said with athletes continuing to build momentum throughout the season, the carnival promised another exciting weekend of surf sports competition and a further opportunity for North Queensland’s surf lifesaving clubs to showcase the skill, determination and sportsmanship of their members as they head into the branch championships.
