Trio studying education degree while staying at home
THREE Innisfail State College students are breaking new ground as part of Queensland University of Technology’s inaugural ‘Grow Your Own’ trainee teacher program in the region.

Taiha Milani, Kimberley Bryant and Mia Munro are the first in the region to join the initiative, delivered through the Employing Queensland: Innovative Pathways to Teacher Program (EQuIPT). This program brings university study directly into the local community, while combining online learning with hands on classroom experience at local schools.

Successful applicants can study full-time or part-time towards a Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching, while working in paid roles such as teacher aide, youth support coordinator or administrative assistant. Each trainee receives a $12,000 scholarship, a Commonwealth Supported Place and wrap around support from QUT to balance their studies with practical teaching.

These three students have already completed their first classroom placements without leaving Innisfail, proving the program’s value in keeping aspiring teachers connected to their local community.
This program is open to year 12 graduates and student leaders keen to pursue teaching careers in their local region and it aims to grow the next generation of educators.
