Two-all draw provides United with energy

INNISFAIL United’s premier men’s team announced themselves in spectacular fashion in their catch-up game on 31 March, thanks to a thunderous 30 metre screamer from Harrison Corica that which thrilled the home crowd and set the tone for a gripping 2-2 draw with Redlynch at Steve Corica Oval.

The home team struck first in the 25th minute when Corica pounced on a ball and unleashed a rocket that flew past the keeper to open the scoring. Despite creating a string of chances, Innisfail carried only a 1–0 lead into the break.

Midway through the second half, Redlynch clawed their way back with an equaliser through Jack Macalister, before snatching a 2-1 advantage minutes later. The visitors looked poised to steal the points until Innisfail’s persistence finally paid off, with Max Darveniza netting the late leveller inside the final 10 minutes to ensure the home team walked away with something to show for their efforts.

Coach John Cavanah admitted the result was “frustrating” given the number of opportunities that went begging, but credited Redlynch for their improvement this season.

“They’ll be a handful for any team,” he said, adding that two games in three days, including a tough road trip to Mareeba had toughened his squad. “Four points out of six is acceptable at this time in the season.”

This draw follows Innisfail’s gritty 1-0 season opening win over Mareeba at Borzi Park, a particularly satisfying result given the side had not played for five weeks due to persistent wet weather wiping out fixtures.

Innisfail face their biggest test yet when the team host reigning premiers Edge Hill at Steve Corica Oval on 12 April.
