INNISFAIL United’s under-23 women have booked their place in the grand final in emphatic fashion, defeating Stratford 3-0 in a high pressure preliminary final at Endeavour Park at the weekend.
The Cutters delivered one of their most composed performances of the season, earning a well deserved shot at the title after a campaign that saw them finish second on the ladder with just two losses and a draw.
The team’s season has been defined by depth and consistency, highlighted by 12 different goal scorers and a standout tally of 24 goals from striker Kaitlyn Musumeci.
After a tough 3-0 semi final loss to ladder leaders Edge Hill on 5 September, the squad responded with intensity at training, determined not to let their grand final hopes slip away.
On game day, the Cutters arrived early, relaxed and focused. From the opening whistle, they dominated possession and created multiple chances, though the first half ended scoreless.
The coaches reinforced the importance of patience, ball control and clinical finishing during the break.
Their message paid off quickly. In the 52nd minute, Kaila Musumeci, assisted by Lauren Musumeci, unleashed a superb strike from outside the 18 yard box, looping the ball over the keeper to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later, Lauren again turned provider, threading a through ball to Addison Tanti, who calmly doubled the lead.
Innisfail continued to press, and in the 72nd minute, Kaitlyn Musumeci produced a moment of individual brilliance beating her defender before driving a low left footed shot under the keeper to seal the 3-0 victory.
Coach Damien Musumeci praised the team’s unity and discipline. “It was an outstanding team performance. Every player went out and played for each other. Our strategy was to keep possession, wear down Stratford and enjoy the experience of finals football.”
Looking ahead to the grand final, Damien Musumeci expects a tough battle against Edge Hill. The Cutters will face Edge Hill in the grand final at 11am on 19 September at Stan Williams Park, Cairns.
