Uncanny likeness to legend
FEW tribute performers in the world can capture the spirit, sound and sheer presence of Sir Elton John quite like Greg Andrew.
With his uncanny resemblance, virtuosic piano skills and unmistakable vocal timbre, Mr Andrew has built a reputation that regularly leaves audiences convinced they’re witnessing the Rocketman himself.
Now, local audiences will have the chance to experience that magic when ‘Rocketman Flying Solo’ arrives at Innisfail’s Shire Hall on Tuesday 4 August, bringing an intimate and nostalgic celebration of Elton John’s greatest hits.
Mr Andrew’s connection to Elton John’s music runs deep. He began classical piano at age 11, advancing quickly before earning a place at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where he graduated in 1989.
Over the next two decades, he carved out a professional career performing across Australia’s premier hotels, resorts and casinos.
Throughout that time, audiences constantly remarked on his uncanny likeness to Elton John, a comparison that eventually led to the creation of ‘The Elton John Experience’ in 2009.
Since then, Mr Andrew has toured internationally, performing in more than 30 countries to over 500,000 people.
His show is widely regarded as one of the best Elton John tributes in the world and in 2017 he became the first and only Elton John tribute artist invited to perform at Tribest UK, held annually in Yorkshire, England and one of the world’s largest and most prestigious tribute festival.
For Mr Andrews, Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s songwriting legacy is deeply personal.
“The music they’ve written over 50 years feels like growing up with a lifelong friend who’s been there all the way,” he said.
“Their songs are timeless and multi generational. At shows, you see grandparents, parents and young adults all enjoying it together.”
His earliest inspiration came from ‘Your Song’.
“I remember learning that beautiful piano melody as a kid,” Mr Andrews said.
“As someone who studied classical piano, there are certain parallels with Sir Elton. It’s an honour to perform these iconic songs and see how audiences react.”
Innisfail audiences can now enjoy this world-class performance up close, with Mr Andrews joined on stage by a world class ensemble of Robert Black (lead guitar and vocals), Tim Bosschieter (bass guitar and vocals), Daniel Gibney (drums and vocals), Ariana Beazley (vocals) and Simon Marafioti (percussion).
Together, they’ll deliver favourites such as ‘Candle in The Wind’, ‘Daniel, Honky Cat’, ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’, ‘Crocodile Rock’ and beloved tracks from ‘The Lion King’.
