Uni centre exceeds targets

THE Cassowary Coast University Centre (CCUC) has exceeded expectations in its inaugural year, welcoming more than 100 students and demonstrating strong regional demand for accessible higher education.

The CCUC, a collaborative initiative between Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) and Cassowary Coast Regional Council, marked its first anniversary with students, staff and council representatives gathering to celebrate the milestone achievement.

Since opening, the centre has attracted a diverse student community, with almost half being the first in their families to pursue higher education. Additionally, 45 students are parents balancing study, work and family responsibilities while remaining in their local communities.

Students are enrolled across high-priority workforce areas including health, education and human services, directly addressing critical skills gaps in the region.

“The centre’s growth had surpassed initial projections while fostering a strong sense of community among students,” said Maryanne Tranter, VPG chief executive officer.

“We’ve seen extraordinary growth that has exceeded our enrolment expectations. What makes this even more exciting is the diversity – first-generation university students, working parents, career changers – the centre is serving the whole community’s educational needs, with over 100 students now using the centre. We’re growing future professionals right here – homegrown talent who will strengthen and sustain the regional workforce for years to come,” Ms Tranter said
