United’s mixed results
INNISFAIL United’s under-23 women continued their blistering run of form on 18 July, smashing Marlin Coast 7-1 at Trinity Beach to reinforce their status as the club’s standout success story of the season.
The Cutters’ latest triumph cements their position in second place on the ladder, just two points behind Edge Hill, after an extraordinary 16 game campaign that has produced a staggering 72 goals while conceding only 10.
Neena Curzon opened the scoring before Marlin Coast briefly levelled at 1-1. But from there, Innisfail took control.
Kaitlyn Musumeci put the Cutters ahead before halftime, then returned in the second half to complete a four goal masterclass.
Lauren Musumeci added another, while Kaila Musumeci’s strike sealed the team’s 14th win of the season. The Cutters’ defence remained rock solid throughout, shutting down Marlin Coast’s attack with discipline and composure.
Innisfail United’s under-23 women face a defining fortnight, with back to back home clashes on 1 and 8 August against ladder leaders Edge Hill set to play a crucial role in their push for the minor premiership.
Sitting just two points behind the competition frontrunners, the Cutters are calling on strong local support as they prepare for two season shaping showdowns on their home turf.
While the women soared, Innisfail’s premier men endured a bruising outing at Pennell Field, Trinity Beach, suffering a 10-0 defeat to Marlin Coast.
Missing several key players through injury and long term absences, the Cutters were forced into a reshuffled line up that struggled to contain a clinical Rangers outfit.
Innisfail started strongly and held firm for the opening 15 minutes before a rebounded free kick handed Marlin Coast the lead.
The Cutters created chances of their own but couldn’t convert, and a long ball over the top made it 2-0 before the break. The second half proved even tougher.
Under-23 men’s coach Chris Clauss said the opposition’s quality was undeniable.
“The second half proved to be a difficult 45 minutes with extremely good opposition,” he said.
“Further injuries forced more substitutes and Marlin Coast were very clinical with their opportunities to score eight more goals. It was a second half to forget from our end.”
The under-23 men also faced Marlin Coast on 18 July, going down 4-1 after a frustrating first half.
A scrappy corner saw the ball forced into the net amid a collision with the keeper, but with no foul awarded, the goal stood.
A similar scramble led to a second goal, leaving Innisfail trailing 2-0 at halftime.
“In the second half we were finally rewarded for our hard work with a solid finishing goal to Joseph Camuglia,” Clauss said.
With the deficit reduced to one, Innisfail pushed hard for an equaliser, but Marlin Coast capitalised on the open space to secure the win.
