United smash Leichhardt

INNISFAIL United’s under-23 ladies’ team delivered one of their most dominant performances of the season, storming to an 8-1 victory over Leichhardt at Steve Corica Oval on 10 April, with striker Kaila Musumeci starring in a commanding attacking display.

Leichhardt opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but Innisfail hit back immediately, with Musumeci netting twice in quick succession.

Another goal to Musumeci and a strike from Malorie Howarth pushed the home side to a 5-0 lead at the break.

Leichhardt managed a late consolation through Reena Sanyasi, but Innisfail continued to pile on the pressure, adding two more goals to seal the emphatic win.

Despite a rain-affected start to the season, the result gives the under-23 women two wins and a draw, placing them second on the ladder.

The team next travelled to Walker Road, Edmonton, to face the Southside Comets on 17 April.

In the under-23 men’s match, Innisfail and Edge Hill fought out a gritty 2-2 draw, sharing the points.

Goals to Chris Clauss and Pierre Alick kept the home side in the contest, with William Darveniza named best on ground for his strong performance.

Innisfail’s premier men’s team faced reigning premiers Edge Hill at Tiger Park but fell 2-1 in a tough outing played in hot and humid conditions.

Kyle McCallum scored Innisfail’s only goal. Innisfail coach John Cavanah said the side “couldn’t get going in the game and we gave a lot of ball away”.
