Peeling back fruit’s future
THE banana roadshows are back in in the Far North next month with growers being updated on matters of importance, from pests and diseases to new fruit varieties.
An Australian Banana Growers spokeswoman said the events at Tully, Innisfail and Atherton were for growers and stakeholders working in the industry.
“They will get up-to-date insights from leading researchers across Queensland and local experts,” she said.
“Topics include TR4, exotic pests and diseases, new banana varieties, Reef water quality and the latest in pest and disease management.”
She said participants were urged to connect with others in the industry.
“These events are a great chance to chat with other growers and directly with researchers. Take part in small group discussions to dive deeper into the latest developments,” the spokeswoman said.
“This year, we’re introducing a special one-hour session after lunch, covering the basics of bunch pests, nematodes and leaf spot.
“It’s perfect for growers who are new to the industry, looking to upskill their team or wanting a quick refresher on the essentials.
“This is a free event for commercial growers and industry stakeholders funded by their R&D levy through Hort Innovation. Queensland Government also contributes to the National Banana Development and Extension Program which organises these events.”
Speakers include:
Australian Banana Growers Council chairman Leon Collins, who will update participants on key industry matters
DPI principal nematologist Dr Tony Pattison, who will discuss systems approaches to managing Panama disease
QAAFI senior research fellow Dr Lilia Carvalhais, who will talk about exotic banana diseases threatening Australia
DPI entomologist Richard Piper, who will outline how to control bunch pests using softer biological options.

The event starts at 8.30am for a 9am start with the main program from 9am-1pm, followed by lunch until 2pm and fundamentals sessions from 2-3pm.

7 August, Innisfail – Brothers Leagues Club.
