Prepare now for cyclones

AS high-risk months approach, new research from Australia Post reveals that Australians are nearly five times more likely to prepare for a holiday than for a weather-related disaster, with almost a third admitting they aren’t prepared at all.

Australia Post and Australian Red Cross have teamed up for EmergencyRedi Week (14-20 September) and are calling on high-risk communities across Australia to take simple, practical steps to protect their families and homes.

Preparation flyers are being delivered to households in disaster-prone areas, sharing straightforward tips on creating an emergency plan and packing a household kit.

Key survey findings:

  • More than a quarter of Australians would turn to Mum first in a disaster

  • Emergency kit priorities – 30% ranked important documents as the top item, followed by first aid kits and water. Phone chargers were seen as more critical than food.

“We’re encouraging everyone to be proactive about getting prepared and building resilience now,” said Australian Red Cross national resilience director Nichola Krey.
